Earnings Call Insights: Flotek Industries, Inc. (FTK) Q2 2025
Management View
CEO Ryan Gillis Ezell highlighted "sixth consecutive quarter of revenue and gross profit growth alongside our 11th consecutive quarter of adjusted EBITDA improvement," noting continued market share gains in both business segments. Ezell announced the acquisition of 30 real-time gas monitoring and dual fuel optimization assets intended to accelerate Flotek's expansion into the energy infrastructure sector, with all assets expected to be operating by January 1, 2026. The company secured a multiyear contract estimated to deliver $156 million in revenue for the Data Analytics segment.
Ezell stated, "Total revenue during the quarter rose 26% versus the second quarter of 2024, highlighted by a 189% increase in Data Analytics revenue, our strongest quarter ever, and a 38% increase in external chemistry revenue. Gross profit climbed 57% versus the second quarter of 2024 with the second quarter of 2025 gross profit margin rising to 25%. Net income totaled $1.8 million. However, excluding $4.2 million in asset acquisition expenses, adjusted net income totaled $6 million, which is a 202% improvement versus the second quarter of 2024 and more than a 10% improvement sequentially. And adjusted EBITDA was up 113% versus the second quarter of 2024 and up more than 20% sequentially."
CFO J. Bond Clement reported, "Our new PWRtek assets had a meaningful impact on our second quarter numbers. Operating for only two months of the quarter, they generated $3.2 million in revenues and contributed roughly $3 million in gross profit. The addition of this new high-margin revenue drove total company gross margins for the quarter to 25% or up approximately 200 basis points sequentially."
Outlook
- Clement confirmed, "In yesterday's release, we reconfirmed our 2025 guidance, which we have summarized on Slide 6. The midpoint of our revenue and adjusted EBITDA guidance indicates growth of 12% and 80%, respectively, as compared to the 2024 metrics. Assuming the midpoint of both metrics implies a 17% adjusted EBITDA margin as compared to only 11% in 2024, further underscoring the positive margin impact that we witnessed during the second quarter with respect to the PWRtek assets. Consistent with last quarter's call, our guidance reflects a conservative outlook for the second half of the year as it relates to our chemistry business, given the continued industry data points and commentary regarding potentially slowing upstream activity."
Financial Results
Clement stated, "Revenue growth was led by a 189% increase in the Data Analytics segment versus the year ago quarter, highlighted by the increase in service and rental-related revenues driven by the PWRtek assets. Data Analytics segment revenue represented 10% of total second quarter revenues, up from 4% a year ago. On the chemistry front, total revenue grew 19% versus the year ago quarter."
The company reported, "Net income for the quarter totaled $1.8 million or $0.05 per share, and it was impacted by $4.2 million in asset acquisition costs, which primarily related to legal and various advisory services. Excluding the expensed acquisition costs, adjusted net income totaled $6 million or $0.16 per diluted share."
Adjusted EBITDA margin increased by 200 basis points sequentially, driven by Data Analytics assets.
Q&A
Jeffrey Scott Grampp, Northland Capital Markets: Asked about progress towards contracting additional PWRtek units to third parties. Ezell responded, "We've now got an additional five customers that we are going through the pilot phase of testing the Verax monitoring... So, we do expect the first smart filtration skid to be out in the next couple of weeks, and we have accelerated the capital builds on the rest of the equipment to start to answer the building demand."
Grampp followed with a question on commercial custody transfer locations and customer breadth. Ezell explained, "We've now fully activated nine of them on the commercial. They started generating revenue at the back half or the back of last week of May, 1st of June. We've had 6 more that are now converting, and that number is continuing to climb."
Grampp inquired about the sustainability of 90% gross margins on PWRtek assets. Clement replied, "It's hard to say if they're going to be sustained at 90%. But as we said initially, our expectations were going to be north of 80%. So, I think 80% to 90% is probably a reasonable assumption going forward as we sit here today."
Gerard J. Sweeney, ROTH Capital, asked about market size and manufacturing capacity. Ezell said, "We've got about 200-plus units available for deployment, and we are steadily streamlining and bringing those in because we feel like there will be larger numbers of those in comparison to the analyzers that is used for PWRtek as that field deployment starts to grow."
Charles Kennedy Fratt, Alliance Global Partners, asked about the timing and revenue potential from non-ProFrac PWRtek customers. Ezell stated, "We will start seeing revenue from non-ProFrac customers in Q3 of this year."
Josh Jayne, Daniel Energy Partners, questioned variability in guidance. Clement stated, "The real variability in the guidance, particularly on the revenue side, is going to be the back half on the chemistry outlook."
Sentiment Analysis
Analysts displayed a positive to slightly optimistic tone, focusing on the scalability of new technologies, customer expansion, and profitability sustainability. Inquiries often centered on future margin sustainability and the commercial rollout of new products.
Management maintained a confident and optimistic demeanor in both prepared remarks and Q&A, with repeated emphasis on transformation, new customer wins, scalability, and recurring revenue. Phrases like "I remain excited about Flotek's future" and "we are confident that our expanding suite of services position us to deliver superior solutions" highlighted this tone.
Compared to the previous quarter, both management and analysts sustained a positive outlook, but there was greater focus this quarter on the operational scaling of new assets and recurring revenue visibility.
Quarter-over-Quarter Comparison
The most recent quarter highlighted the first full-quarter financial impact of the PWRtek asset acquisition, with Data Analytics segment revenue and margins accelerating more sharply than the prior quarter, where initial integration was underway.
Management's confidence in Data Analytics driving over half of 2026 profitability remained consistent, but this quarter provided greater detail on operational deployment and multi-customer traction.
Guidance language continued to emphasize caution on the chemistry segment, citing ongoing commodity price volatility, but the financial outlook for Data Analytics became more robust.
Analysts' questions shifted more toward commercialization and deployment pace of new assets, compared to the previous quarter's focus on contract backlog and asset integration.
Risks and Concerns
Management cited "dynamic geopolitical and macroeconomic challenges that have generated volatility within the commodities market" and noted "uncertainties around activity levels in the second half of 2025 persists due to the macro factors that... could affect the completion chemistry market."
Clement indicated a "conservative outlook for the second half of the year as it relates to our chemistry business, given the continued industry data points and commentary regarding potentially slowing upstream activity."
Analysts probed for sustainability of high gross margins and capacity to meet anticipated demand, highlighting execution risk as the company scales new segments and technologies.
Final Takeaway
Flotek Industries reported another quarter of strong financial performance, driven by the successful integration and rapid expansion of its Data Analytics segment, which is now positioned to become the primary profitability driver by 2026. The company's backlog of recurring revenue contracts, robust margin performance, and operational scaling of new assets signal continued transformation and growth, even as management remains cautious about near-term chemistry segment volatility due to external market factors. Investors are likely to focus on Flotek's ability to execute on its technology-driven strategy while maintaining margin discipline and capitalizing on new high-margin, recurring revenue streams.
