The Hartford Public Library's downtown branch is moving into the second phase of a major renovation project aimed at transforming the space into a modern, community-centered hub.
“To catch up with the new times, we got a new library,” Henri Mathieu of Hartford said.
Library leaders have adopted the theme “Restore, renew, reimagine,” as part of the ongoing makeover, according to Bridget Quinn, president and CEO of the Hartford Public Library.
The library suffered significant damage in recent years when a combination of a failed HVAC system and a harsh winter caused flooding on the first, second and third floors. Instead of simply repairing the space, Quinn said the team saw an opportunity to make lasting improvements.
“We're super excited that phase two of construction is underway, and on schedule, and we're so excited to be looking forward to bringing this to the community,” Quinn said.

The renovated library will include several new features, such as an adult education center designed to support immigrants learning English and preparing for U.S. citizenship.
A new event space will host music, dance, community conversations and other programs.
Additional upgrades include new collaborative areas affiliated with the University of Connecticut and an expanded media production space in partnership with Hartford Public Access Television.
Mathieu, who has been visiting the library since 1975, recalled spending time in the children’s section with his mother. He said the library has long been a vital community asset.
“There's a lot of people who don't have places to stay, we come from poor income and to have this particular library here it opens up opportunities for individuals to get out of where they are in their head. Be able to read a book, learn something. It provides so many resources,” Mathieu said.
He credited librarians with helping him with homework at a young age and said the renovations will benefit future generations.
“It helps build intellectuality in young kids; it's a chance to learn. Books are expensive and you can't really afford a lot of books today. Having libraries gives education almost free,” Mathieu said.
The library is open and offers its usual amenities to the public.
The second and third floors of the library are also open and offer services for children and teens.
Quinn said the project remains on time and on budget, with some parts expected to be completed by December and the rest by early 2026.
“The Hartford Public Library is a huge gathering spot, and we want to offer even more places for them to come and experience what is wonderful about our city,” Quinn said.
